Frequently asked questions
What is prorated rent?
The rent for part of a month, charged when a tenancy starts or ends on a day other than the first or last day of the month. It is the daily rent multiplied by the days you live there.
How do I calculate prorated rent?
Divide the monthly rent by the number of days in that month, then multiply by the days you live there. For $1,500.00 a month and a move-in on June 16 (15 days of a 30-day month): $1,500.00 ÷ 30 × 15 = $750.00.
Is there one correct method?
No. Two methods are common: monthly rent divided by the days in that month, or monthly rent times 12 divided by the days in the year. They give slightly different answers. Use the one your lease or landlord states. If the lease is silent, agree on the method in writing.
Do I count the move-in day?
Usually yes, since you have the unit that day. This calculator counts the first day you live there when moving in and the last day you live there when moving out. If your landlord counts differently, follow the lease.
Does this calculator store or send what I type?
