Rent Affordability Calculator

See how much rent fits your income by the common 30% guide, or what income a rent needs. This is a rule of thumb, not a legal limit. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

An example

A household earns $60,000.00 a year before tax. That is $5,000.00 a month. 30% of $5,000.00 is $1,500.00, so rent up to about that amount fits the guide. For a $2,000.00 rent, the household would need about $80,000.00 a year.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 30% rule?

A common guide says housing costs should take no more than 30% of your before-tax income. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation uses it to define affordable housing. It is a guide, not a law, and no landlord has to follow it.

Does it include utilities?

The CMHC measure counts shelter costs, which can include utilities. If your rent does not include heat, electricity or water, add those to the rent before comparing.

Is it before or after tax?

Before tax. Use the combined income of everyone who pays toward the rent.

Does this store or send my income?

No. It runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere.
